Ridge Gourd Seed Sowing Guide
Before sowing, it is essential to check whether the ridge gourd seeds have been pre-treated with fungicides or protective coatings. Most commercial hybrid and open-pollinated ridge gourd seeds available in the market are already treated. If the seeds are not pre-treated, it is advisable to treat them with recommended fungicides or bio-agents under expert guidance before sowing.
Time to Sow Ridge Gourd Seeds
The sowing schedule may vary depending on the region. In hilly areas, the best time to sow ridge gourd (beerakaya) seeds is from April to May, while in South India, the rabi season crop is generally planted in December. For the summer crop, ridge gourd (turai) seeds are usually sown from January to February, when temperatures begin to rise and conditions favor quick germination. For the rainy season crop, the ideal sowing period is from June to July, aligning with the onset of the monsoon, which supports vigorous vine growth.
Method of Sowing Ridge Gourd Seeds
Ridge gourd (turai) seeds can either be directly sown in the main field or first raised in polybags and later transplanted about two weeks after germination. Some farmers soak the seeds in water overnight before sowing to promote faster germination.
The crop can be planted on raised beds, in furrows, or in pits, depending on the cultivation system. Under the bower or trellis method, maintain a row spacing of 1.5–2.5 meters and a plant-to-plant distance of 60–120 cm for optimal vine growth and fruit setting. In the pit method, where vines trail along the ground, the recommended spacing is 1.5–2.0 meters between rows and 1.0–1.5 meters between pits.
However, the exact spacing may vary based on the method, region, season, and other factors. In South India, a common practice is to dig pits measuring 45 cm × 45 cm, fill them with a mixture of topsoil and farmyard manure, and sow three seeds per pit. After germination, the seedlings are thinned to two healthy plants per pit to ensure proper growth and airflow.
